Aphasia

Pragma is the publisher of a screening instrument for adults with aphasia, the "Utrecht Communication Inventory" (in Dutch: Utrechts Communicatie Onderzoek, or: UCO). The instrument is available in Dutch only.

Other activities by Pragma, for adults with aphasia:

  • The development of Intercom, a loose leaf folder with language and communication activities for adults with aphasia. It was published in 1987 and can still be ordered from the Dutch Aphasia Foundation: www.afasie.nl

  • The working group: Aphasia & Reading. This was a group of representatives of the Dutch public libraries, the libraries for the blind (talking books), aphasia therapists and adults with aphasia. Together, we developed materials for readers with aphasia, such as 'memory supports' and specially made talking books for readers with aphasia. We also developed information brochures for public libraries and organized presentations and workshops, to help public libraries provide special services for adults with aphasia.

  • The working group Aphasia & Computers. From a very early date - when computers were big, and could only show text and some basic line pictures, a number of professionals from the Aphasia field met regularly to discuss the possibilities of using computers in the rehabilitation of adults with aphasia. Programs were tested for usability, suggestions for the standardization of hardware and software were made, workshops and presentations were organized. The activities of the workgroup were discontinued, when computers became household goods. We still review and test mainstream software, for it's usability in aphasia therapy.
